Ashanti Development
With its thriving gold mining and cocoa industries, Ashanti is the largest and statistically richest region in Ghana. But few local people benefit from these natural resources and, to make matters worse, they are now faced with the consequences of a changing climate. Boreholes are drying up and some traditional crops no longer flourish, while yields of others grow less and less.
We work directly with the villagers to tailor solutions for their immediate and long-term needs. We know there is no single magic bullet to make all the problems of the area fall away. The villagers know that too and are working with us to make their lives much, much better.
Take Gyetiase, for example. We have brought the village clean drinking water, training in health, hygiene and the construction of latrines, medical help, an agricultural cooperative and finance to set up small businesses. The village still needs our help but will be independent soon. We've already begun to work with neighbouring villages.
Our team is a 100% volunteer force with a wide range of expertise. We pay no wages in the UK and every penny we raise goes toward funding our work - and only where necessary. The villagers are integral to the success of these programmes, doing much of the manual work to planning their own skills training.
You too can play a part and we invite you to join us in helping make a permanent difference to the lives of thousands of people in a much-overlooked part of the world.
